Scent-imental Journey
SCENT AND MEMORY RECOLLECTION

A PROGRAM FOR SENIORS

Scent is one of the most powerful senses we have and the number one trigger of memories!

In this program, we explore many different scents to trigger active memory recollection.  The Good News is that long term memory is stored in the part of the brain that is easily reached by scent - and often the recollection of memories through scent is faster and more successful than with visual or auditory clues!

GOALS OF THIS WORKSHOP:
  • to celebrate the recognition of memories

  • to promote active participation

  • to bring enjoyment through recollection

  • to trigger olfactory responses

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
  • to stimulate the mind through scent

  • to release long term memories

  • to encourage reminiscing

  • to actively listen to memories and stories

Participants will be welcomed and offered different items to smell. The scents may range from cleaning products to hand lotions, from candy to wood mulch, from fresh-cut grass to crayons. All items are of a general nature with positive associations. While memory loss is not reversible, these workshops are designed to stimulate the minds of each Participant, to awaken memories, and encourage remembrance and recollection.

Some Memories will be stronger than others and all Participants will be offered every item to smell. Not every item will trigger a memory from every Participant. Every item will generate responses from most Participants, and usually others will chime in with their similar memories. The sharing of memories is the goal of this Program and the olfactory triggers are the main pathway to achieve this.

All programs last approximately 60 - 90 minutes and will offer approximately 20 different scents.
